A young attorney in the DC Public Defender's office has seen one too many young black men strung out on drugs, has just lost his girl, who left him to marry someone who could keep her in style, and is getting really depressed. Suddenly, Max Pace, a snake oil salesman, walks into Clay Carter's office and offers him more money than he can contemplate. Turns out one of the major pharmaceutical companies has made and is marketing a drug that is defective and if Clay will offer the victims $5 million each, he will also get $5 million for each claim he settles out of court. Clay jumps at the chance, leaving his poor defendant, who it turns out, is actually the victim of another defective drug, to go to prison for life.

Max feeds Clay more stolen information, and in a very short time, Carter becomes THE KING OF TORTS, with fancy cars, a plane, homes, a high priced mistress, and looks to be on top of the world, until the FBI comes after Clay and his associates, and his fall is just as precipitous as his rise. This is a cautionary tale, as if we needed to be reminded to count your fingers after you have shaken hands with a lawyer.

Dennis Boutsikiras does an excellent job of reading THE KING OF TORTS, and since this is the usual Grisham work, very facile but little or no substance, the abridged audio version is great, since you can then enter into conversations about best sellers as if you had slogged through the full text. And audio books are great for trips. If you are in a plane, no one will bother you to ask what you are reading.
