Abigail Devereaux is lying in a basement, tied and blindfolded. She has no memory of how she came to be there or of her captor. Nor does she know how many days she has been there when she manages to free herself and dashes to a nearby home to ask the man there to call the police. During her stay in the hospital, Abby begins to realize that the police and the psychologist don't exactly believe her. Abby has been in an abusive relationship and has also had bouts of depression in her past. Yet she knows that her kidnapping was not a fantasy, no more so than the four names whispered to her by her captor of other women he had kidnapped.

Abby is frightened that the man may come for her again, yet she must try to regain her memory and reconstruct the days leading up to her kidnapping. It comes as quite a shock to her to find out that she quit her job, moved out of the apartment she shared with her abusive lover and apparently had moved in with a new friend, Jo. Getting her hair cut and dyed and a new wardrobe changes her appearance. However, Abby has come to believe that Jo has disappeared when she learns that Jo's friends and co-workers have not heard from her. The police are not cooperative and Abby now has to find out what happened to Jo as well as to herself.

This is a chilling novel. From experiencing her captivity with Abby to the frustration and danger of trying to find her lost memories, the reader is swept up into the story. Abby is worried; and she's scared. She is trying hard not to break down. Just imagine how it would be to be certain you are being watched, to think that someone actually wants to kill you, to have no one believe you. However, she goes from clue to clue, assembling her "lost hours" as she calls them, following the slightest little detail, such as where Jo was going when she decided to get a kitten, keeps you from putting the book down. Her bravery and determination when she confronts her demons is amazing. Highly recommended.
