Harry Bosch is a tough Los Angeles cop assigned to the elite Robbery/Homicide division of the city's police department. For a long time the cops, in a special task force, have been searching for a particularly ugly serial killer who preys on women on the fringes, women in the sex industry. Harry Bosch, through a fluke of timing, good cop sense and his go-it-alone instinct has found the man the city calls the Dollmaker.

Facing the man alone, with no backup yet called, detective Bosch sees the man ignore his warning and reach for a pillow--to hide his nakedness or to grab a gun? Harry shoots and kills the man. Evidence discovered in the room indicate the man is in fact the Dollmaker.

But--

But there are enough questions to raise more. CONCRETE BLONDE is Pulitzer prize finalist Connolly's story of the civil trial of Bosch, while Bosch and his fellow detectives pursue puzzling questions about the Dollmaker and the murders. Connelly effectively cuts between trial and police procedures and interjects enough of Harry's more private life to give us a fully-realized, real character, one who experiences change, anxiety, joy and pain.

A clean effective writer, Connelly maintains the rollercoaster tension of the essentially static courtroom scenes and plays that nicely against the action-oriented activities of the homicide division. If gritty, honest police procedurals, peopled with real and interesting characters are your reading interest, I invite you to meet Harry Bosch.
