Lawson is a Fixer. He attempts to maintain the balance between humans and vampires who coexist on earth. They are apparently of the same species but are the result of parallel evolution. It is Lawson's job to keep rogue vampires in Boston from endangering the status quo.

The Council has finally agreed that Cosgrove, a rogue vampire who loves to slay, must be killed since he feels he can take over the world. Lawson's control, McKinley, tells him to go for it, and he hits the clubs where he knows Cosgrove will hunt. Cosgrove, however, seems to be a step ahead, and kills the doorman at the club on Landsdowne Street where Lawson is waiting.

Simbik had been a friend of Lawson's. He vows to find and kill Cosgrove, without compunction. At Simbik's funeral, Lawson meets Talya, a beautiful ex-KGB agent, now a contract killer. She was Simbik's fiancee, and she would also like to see his murder avenged. Lawson can't tell her he is a vamp, but he does tell her he knows who the murderer is. She vows to kill Cosgrove, but Lawson must figure out a way to work with her but tell her as little as possible.

This is a good novel in the noir tradition, but in this case, the dame is another gunman, and the bad guy and the good guy are both vampires. Cosgrove's megalomania is unbounded and we are taken on an enjoyable ride through the night life of Boston and Cambridge, and through a reworking of the ancient vampire legends. This first book in the series is out of print. If you like vampire tales or action filled noirish stories, see if your library has a copy.
