A murder victim is found, and for the LA police, it is just another car-jacking gone wrong. For reporter Eve Diamond, it is something else. Investigating, she finds a world of sexual slavery, but also endangers her life. Someone out there wants their secrets to stay secret.

JASMINE TRADE paints a picture of a Los Angeles that readers rarely see. Yes, authors show us crime and gangland activity, but a world of immigrant Chinese filled with danger, slavery and "parachute kids" is one that novelists do not often create. Denise Hamilton does, however, and creates a fast, highly readable, yet intriguing mystery novel.

Her Chinese-American characters are perhaps the most interesting, since they live in a world that appears altogether foreign to the average reader. These "parachute" kids", teenagers left to fend for themselves with a large allowance whilst their rich parents continue to live in China, are a phenomenon that many will find hard to understand, although still intriguing. We also learn a great deal about the world of the murder victim through her diary. An old plot device, yes, but one that allows Hamilton to paint a striking picture of a confused girl.

Overall, JASMINE TRADE is an enjoyable read and it will take an average reader only a very short space of time to finish it. It was nominated for numerous awards on its publication and those nominations were deserved.
