TOUGH COOKIE
by Diane Mott Davidson

319 pages
$6.99
ISBN: 0553578308

Goldy Schulz is having a bad month. The Health Department has temporarily closed her catering business after having discovered substandard plumbing in her newly-renovated kitchen; her live PBS cooking show was a disaster; and she is about to sell her husbandís antique skis to a former, not-quite boyfriend. Could it get any worse? It can, if the buyer was Doug Portman, head of the Parole Board and the murder victim du jour in Diane Mott Davidsonís installment of the Goldy Schulz mysteries.

The author mixes humor, cooking recipes, and murder mystery in this entry of the series. Goldy loves her family, loves to cook, and every once in a while helps her police officer husband solve crimes. Tough Cookie is the type of person she is who does not cower away from any challenges. What at first seems to be a skiing accident turns out to be murder. There is no shortage of suspects and the police are even suspicious of the caterer. Her former, abusive husband has been serving time for several years and he is up for parole. Why would she sell some valuable skills to Douglas Portman if it were not to keep her divorced spouse in jail?

The crime in the novel is pretty straightforward with red herrings sprinkled in the story for flavoring. Tough Cookie is a book to be savored and enjoyed. If you like to cook you might want to try some of Goldyís recipes printed in the book. If you get the opportunity to listen to Barbara Rosenblattís interpretation of the novel, you are in for a treat. This book is another example as to why she is one of the most requested readers out there. You will not be disappointed.
