FBI Agent Tess McCallum has been tracking a serial killer known as Mobius for several years. He is responsible for the murder of several young women in Colorado, where he gives them the ultimate pleasure before giving them a slow death. He has taunted her for several years by sending cheesy postcards and slaying her partner. Now, he has resurfaced in California after a two-year hiatus and Tess is back on the case. The problem is that the stakes have gone higher, WAY higher.

Amanda Pierce is on the run. She is being chased by government agents for the dangerous substance she is carrying on a stolen suitcase. She is meeting a buyer who will take the stuff out of her hands and help her leave the country. Unfortunately, she will never get the chance. She will encounter Mobius and make him an even more dangerous man. Time is now running out.

Out of the five Michael Prescott novels out there this is the worst one. The author takes too many poetic licenses to tell the story and one cannot help but wonder if there is a hidden agenda. The FBI agents in the book are so dumb in this story that they could not find a Trekkie in a Star Trek convention. A visibly pregnant agent is used during a risky surveillance (you can probably figure out what happened to her) and the need-to-know basis is taken a bit too far. Don’t get me started on background checks.

What was the purpose of this book? To fulfill a contract? Logic and common sense be damned. It is only in television cartoons that the hero has what they need behind their back or inside their pocket. Pulling a story out of a hat just does not work. If you need to read a Michael Prescott novel, try The Shadow Hunter or Stealing Faces. Two out of five ain’t bad.
