This is an insider's story of the spectacular rise and fall of a popular music band. It has everything: sex, drugs, messages and murder. Out of Jamaica comes a new band with Rastafarian roots and a messianic leader, a singer who seems to have an instinctive and instant connection with his audiences. Building on this connection, the band seems destined for super stardom, and thus prepared to bring to a worldwide audience its particular message. But the band is an aggregation of complicated and tormented individuals with ties to each other than are more tenuous than at first examination. And under the surface, there appears to be ongoing tragedy.

Author Don Bruns' protagonist, a music reporter and book author, has been on the music scene too long. He's known too many hot-shot producers, fenced with money men, made lots of parties and lost his wife in the bargain. Now, with murder in the forefront of the band's background, Mick Sever reluctantly wades in once more to try to sort out the motives the players, and find a killer.

There are twists within twists, intriguing characters to follow and the book is written with a sense of authority that tells us the author knows his field. Bruns is a new author on the crime fiction scene who knows how to write. He tells a fresh story in a fast, powerful, and engaging manner. The characters are sparingly but tellingly sketched. The story unfolds with logical, fast paced tempo. The scenes are carefully and accurately described, and if the focus seems to wander just a bit toward the end, if the complexities seem to almost trap the author, Jamaica Blue is a fast, enjoyable ride in the steamy island sun.
