Charles Schine misses his usual commuter train to Manhattan and meets Lucinda, a lovely stockbroker. He strikes up a flirtation which leads to luncheon dates which lead to an assignation in a seedy hotel.

There they are accosted by a man who robs Charles and Lucinda and forces Charles to watch while he rapes Lucinda. Because they are both married (but not to each other) they cannot go to the police. The assailant, Vasquez, tracks Charles from the identity in his wallet and blackmails him for a great deal of money. To try to take down Vasquez Charles hires a hit man , but the hit man ends up dead. Charles is forced o risk his job, his marriage and the health of his diabetic daughter in the battle of wits with Vasquez.

Charles reinvents himself and ends up teaching classes in Attica where he hopes for a final reckoning with Vasquez.

It is a well-plotted, riveting story of lust, betrayal, blackmail, murder and retribution. The characters are complex and compelling. The duel of minds between Charles and Vasquez is fascinating. The story is full of twists and turns; a real roller coaster, full of suspense with an unexpected culmination of Charles' dilemma.
