When Angela Brookman dies after being hit by a cab on Christmas Eve, she leaves behind two very different men. One is her grieving husband David who chooses to remember Angela by donating her organs for transplant. The other is Justin Everhard III, an ex-lover with an extremely twisted personality. The architect of Angela's accident, Everhard is determined to see her reincarnations die also. He stalks the three women who benefited from Angela's transplanted organs, first killing Olivia McGlinchie and burying her body near David Brookman's mountain retreat. Isabel Van Nuys, a realtor who depends on Angela's lungs to breathe, is his second victim. The last person left on Everhard's list is Rose Larrabee, a widowed mother of two small children and recipient of Angela's heart.

Everhard taunts Rose with valentines and small gifts that make her aware she's being stalked. The problem for Rose is determining which man in her life is the disguised Justin Everhard. Could it be Luke, her once grouchy but now considerate boss? Or Bill, the newly hired gay man who works with her at the bookstore? How about Hitch, her dead husband's buddy who's suddenly taken an interest in Rose and her children. Or Gregg, her son's handsome pre-school teacher who arrived in town just before the trouble began. Then there's Peter, her sister-in-law's quiet fiancé who Rose isn't quite sure belongs in Leslie's life. Lastly, there's Rose's new neighbor Ben, a man who pays little attention to his love-starved wife Christine and always seems to be missing when a new bout of trouble hits.

It isn't until David Brookman decides to face the reality of his wife's death that the pieces of the puzzle start to come together. A snowstorm that hits the town of Laurel Bay complicates matters and nearly covers the tracks of the elusive and dangerous Everhard. In a race against time and nature, David tries to warn the frightened Rose of her approaching doom.

She Loves Me Not is one of those edge-of-your-seat suspense stories that will keep you up reading late into the night. Staub's characters are well drawn and realistic, while the plot is sufficiently complicated to keep readers guessing until the end. For lovers of a stand-alone mystery written in the style of Mary Higgins Clark, this book is a definite must.
