Hitchcock Sewell is a full time mortician and a part time sleuth. Quite appropriately, this book begins at a funeral. His sleuthing project opens with a missing Hungarian nanny, Sophie. Sophie worked for Hitch's friend, Libby, and her husband Mike. Mike will not be winning "the husband of the year" award and he attracts trouble everywhere he goes, both personally and professionally. Hitch and his friend Pete begin a search that not only includes Libby and Mike, but also the other people who have interacted with Sophie.

Some of the most interesting characters are Aunt Billie (she runs the funeral home with Hitch), Pete (a friend who works as a part time P.I.), Nick Fallon (a reporter), Julia (Hitch's ex-wife), Crawford and Virginia Larue. Crawford was the leader of the religious group ARK (Alliance for Reason and Kindness).

When you meet Crawford up close and personal, there is doubt if he has any sense of reason or kindness. Hitch (shortened form of Hitchcock) will bring you into the fold and come to the rescue. This will only come to pass after he has taken his share of bumps and scraps. Some of Tim Cockey's characters could be related to Grandma Mazur from Janet Evanovich fame. Some are bigger than life.

One liners and occasional Humphrey Bogart type quotes will give you pure enjoyment. (I know a person that talks like this!) A fun romp with quick tongued comments left me forgetting that Hitch did have a day job; he had people to bury. Just when his life would become too bizarre, he would pull back to his sanctification of the funeral home and all it entailed.

This is my first in the "Hitch" series of four and to say that I was taken by enjoyment would not suffice! Enjoy - the three prior books in this series are THE HEARSE CASE SCENARIO, HEARSE OF A DIFFERENT COLOR, AND THE HEARSE YOU CAME IN ON.

Recommended for a fun read!
