For those who have had a taste of Rhys Bowen's Evan Evans mysteries, the gentle nature of the Welsh village where Evan is the local constable seems an idealic getaway. But with the arrival of the English government, slaughtering whole herds of sheep in an attempt to stop the spread of a deadly virus, all Evan can think of is to get away! Even a dreaded trip to take his fiancé to meet his mother seems a brighter way to spend the coming weeks.

Evan's arrival at his boyhood home, however, does not bring about the fond memories he had been hoping to share with Bronwen. A local councilman's daughter has been raped and murdered--and the hoodlum the South Wales police have arrested is the same boy who a few years earlier was remanded to the juvenile authorities for shooting Evan's father.

I have always enjoyed the ease of the Evan Evans mystery series: the mystery is tantamount and the gore is non-existent. This installment, however, delves much deeper into the dark-side of life than we've ever seen Evan venture. The mystery is still the most important part of the story, but we also get a look into Evan and what makes him the man that he is. Fans will enjoy getting to know Evan even better--and those who may have found this series a bit too light will be delighted at the depth this installment brings.
