Augustus MacKnight hopes to bolster his failing marriage with a successful investment he made in the stock market. That is doomed to failure when his wife informs him of an adulterous affair and asks for a divorce.

She is brutally murdered the next day with no obvious killer.

Augustus is the beneficiary of her million dollar insurance policy.

Following his previous success in the stock market he determines to change his occupation. Using the insurance money he becomes a member of a day trading group with the encouragement of his playboy friend, Vincent.

In the meantime he has become the chief suspect in the death of his wife and is constantly questioned by homicide detective, Dorsey

To try to take the pressure off himself, he attempts to investigate the connections between his wife, her boss and co-workers, hoping to find the reason for her death.

The plot is well constructed and complicated, keeping the reader wondering what is going to happen next. .

The background of the financial and legal world is skillfully presented, making it very realistic. The characters are credible, well representing those in the financial. legal and police world.

It does seem a bit implausible that a novice with no background in finance can suddenly become such a successful day trader.

This is a page turner with no one being who or what he seems to be.
