Austin Star reporter Lena Dryer is writing a feature about the Texas Death Row system. One of the people she interviews is Ramon Willis, an inmate, who was found guilty of first-degree murder and sentenced to die within a week. This blue-eyed Hispanic convict convinces her of his innocence but there is little she can do. She returns a week later and witnesses Ramon’s execution by lethal injection. She has no idea what she plans to do next. Just give it a couple of weeks; her life is about to turn interesting.

When Ramon awakens from his death, he learns that he was not executed, but he is in hell. He is being used as an unauthorized guinea pig for the U.S. Army doing illegal experiments on germ warfare. After a battery of tests, Ramon shows no signs of sickness and the military wants to know why. Before they get the chance, the Death Row inmate manages to escape and creates a panic at the installation. The army will have to work fast to contain the situation or lose years of research and start a scandal. When the researchers forces Ramon’s hand, he tracks Lena. Their main plan was to expose this secret instead they will be part of a cat and mouse game.

Living Proof is Peter J. Thompson’s debut novel and even though the story is a bit formulaic, it is not bad. The action is fast-paced and continues moving without taking a breather. Some of the story elements, such as the top-secret project, could have used a bit more detail to help improve the story. The conclusion is a bit predictable but does not deter from its entertainment value. The author leaves the possibility for the characters to return. Should they come back, maybe the author can develop the characters better. There is no problem with is action sequences. A good novel for someone looking for a quick read.
