Blue-collar single mother Emily Dickinson scholar Karen Pelletier has given up her life and lover in New York to take a position at a small prestigious Massachusetts college. At a faculty cocktail party, a loudmouthed womanizing English department colleague falls out of a closet into Dr. Pelletier's arms. He's been strangled with his own very loud necktie.

Many people had reason to want to kill Astin-Berger. Aside from preying on women, he also prevented several instructors from gaining tenure at the recent tenure conference. Pelletier is asked to help trace Randy Astin-Berger's research by the local police, especially Lt. Charlie Piotrowski. She finds strangely attracted to the very WASPy university president, Avery Mitchell, despite her usual scorn for the type.

Pelletier's back story is defined in this, the first in the series. Dobson has created an interesting protagonist who has the intelligence and skills to help the police. She also has a wicked eye for the strange types that inhabit college campuses. This is a wicked academic mystery.
