All the action in this book takes place during a 12-day period during a hot summer in a small Minnesota town. It all started at the Pine Brook Inn on a steamy Saturday night. Murders are not common in small towns and when the two bodies were discovered by a deputy sheriff answering a call from a woman trying to get in touch with her granddaughter it was first believed to be a murder/suicide. Undersheriff Dan Williams thought it was a double murder and over the objections of the Coroner he requested the M.E. attend and the M.E. proved him right.

Dan Williams is a top-notch investigator. He likes being Undersheriff because he does not have to deal with politics. He leaves that to the Sheriff. Dan has enough stress in his life as lead investigator. He has a good team and he utilizes them to the best of their abilities.

Dan and the team are initially puzzled at the brutality of the crime. The obvious suspect is quickly eliminated; now, where do they look for a suspect? The murderer is not so much evil as pathetic. Two of the deputies have a discussion - if a killer was abused as a child, is it the former abuse or criminal intent that pushed the killer into his criminal acts. Surely a discussion that will never be resolved.

The action is very fast paced, there is a lot of attention to the procedural details regarding the police and the story line is well plotted. The characters are interesting and the ending is a surprise. "Where Evil Hides" is a very well written first book and there is at least one more in the Dan Williams series.
