Late May of 1944 and an attempt to destroy the exchange connecting French and German telephone systems in the town of Ste-Cecile goes horribly wrong. British secret agent, Felicity "Flick" Clariet, married to Michel, a resistance fighter, escapes to England. She has only a short time in which to assemble a crew of women who are willing to risk everything to go into France, infiltrate the Chateau holding the telephone exchange, and blow it up, making the coming allied invasion just a tiny bit less hazardous.

This is a typical Follett thriller, strong on plot and weak on characterization but it moves very quickly. The steps in assembling the crew in England are detailed. Flick has only a very short time in which to recruit and train a group of women. The story is based on a true story from the files of the S.O.E., the Special Operations Executive.

Kate Reading is the performer who brings Flick's story to life. The quiet English voice makes the horrors of Gestapo torture even more repulsive to the civilized mind. If you enjoy listening to unabridged audio cassettes, this is one to look for or to purchase.
