RAIN FALL
by Barry Eisler
G. P.Putnam's Sons, July 2002
306 pages
$24.95
ISBN: 0399149104.01

Barry Eisler has written a stylish noir set in Japan. His hero, John Rain, is a Vietnam veteran now living life as a businessman in Tokyo. John Rain has a 'legitimate' business as a cover but he really is a hit-man who specializes in making his hits look like they have died of natural causes. This book centers on a hit that has gone wrong - and that involves government corruption at the highest levels.

This book is a stylish page turner. The dust jacket says that the author is at work on the next John Rain novel and you'll have that forthcoming novel on your short list by the time you are half way through this one.

The setting Tokyo setting and atmospheres were very attractive to this reader. The locus of the book is the cosmopolitan, jazz club going, luxury shop set but with an arty touch. The book's setting and feel brought the novels of Haruki Murakami to mind (particularly The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle). Barry Eisler's prose is certainly more plain spoken and the content is less mystic / spiritual, but readers of Murakami's literary 'mysteries' will enjoy Barry Eisler's John Rain very much as will mystery readers in general. Highly Recommended.
