The year is 1915 and the luxury liner, Luisitania, is about to embark on its voyage to America with its rich and famous passengers.

There are rumors that the ship is carrying a concealed shipment of munitions and it is feared that it will be a target for German U-boats.

A journalist, Willard Wright, in need of funds, is hired to interview the passengers and investigate the truth of the rumors. He is to travel incognito as S.S.VanDine, a mystery writer and amateur detective.

He discovers three stowaways whom he suspects of being German saboteurs. Then one of them is murdered. The ship's detective, Philo Vance, enlists VanDine's aid to discover the murderer. When there are two more murders they suspect a traitor in the ranks of the passengers, several of whom have received telegrams warning them of the danger of being torpedoed.

The two must try to discover the guilty party and attempt to avoid what would be a great tragedy.

Unfortunately on May 7,1915 the Luisitania was torpedoed with the loss of 1200 people, causing a change in the outcome of World War I.

The book is rich in detail of the atmosphere and of the passengers aboard the ship. The tension evoked by the possibility of disaster is compelling. The scenes of the torpedoing , the sinking of the ship, and the gallantry of the passengers are riveting.

This is an excellent imaginative recreation of events which changed the course of history.
