Take one bright gay psychiatrist, one very troubled but straight Chicago detective, and inject them into a death scene that may or may not be suicide. It's a recipe for a mesmerizing almost traditional, police procedural mystery. Neither breathtaking nor plodding in pace, this one insidiously takes one by the fingers and tugs you just a little closer. What is it about this scene that raises questions in detective Thinnes' mind? What is it with this doctor and his cats? Let's just turn the page and see if we can find out.

And the next thing you know, time has passed unheeded, the pages continue to turn and the darkness around the Chicago cops has reached out and snared you as well. Some questions have been answered, but more have been raised. A parade of smarmy, upright, ambivalent, characters have reached out and pushed at our comfortable zone. Not a lot. No polemics here, just a dark, tight, carefully constructed mystery that has everything a crime fiction aficionado could ask for. The pace is elegant, the clues carefully placed, the dialogue and the descriptions are right on the money.

This Malice Domestic award winner is dark and intelligent and a novel to be savored and treasured. While it may now be difficult to find, make the effort. You'll be glad you did.
