Another entry in the delightful and fascinating Alaskan series featuring State Trooper Alex Jensen. Not the least dimension of this book is a fine opportunity to learn something about our northernmost state. Author Sue Henry judiciously blends great quantities of valuable detail about the not-so-frozen north, with a strong, complex story. She does this by bringing in several colorful and unusual characters whose professions and activities are frequently curious.

One of the most fascinating characters is Aklak, who begins the book. Aklak is a great brown bear, otherwise known as a silvertip grizzly. This great bear remains a periodic presence through the entire book, and is a vivid parallel to the human interactions in the novel. Unlike Aklak, Henry's human characters are multi-dimensional. And yet, the similarities of action between the bear, driven by instinct and habit, and the actions of the human cast, driven by a complex welter of their own fears, tribulations greed and honesty, are sometimes remarkably similar.

Six months before the story begins, bush pilot Norm Lewis disappears. Now, while Spring pushes back the Winter, and hibernating bears emerge from their winter dens, the half-submerged plane owned by Lewis is located in a small lake. Still strapped to the passenger seat is the frozen body of a woman. The problem is the plane is nowhere near where it should be, according to the filed flight plan. What's more, the charter schedule made no mention of a passenger, and the pilot is nowhere to be found.

The more trooper Jensen and the missing pilot's wife, Rochelle, probe the puzzling facts, the more questions arise. The tangled threads of this compelling plot weave and unravel, until in the end, it all becomes clear. But not until readers have gone on an adventurous trek in the Alaskan wild. This one rates a strong positive recommendation.
