Tropical Storm Hector is on target to pay a visit to the coast of Florida. This would be a good night to stay in. It's definitely not a good night to go on a boat trip - even if the ship's the same size as the Titanic. The 'Extravaganza of the Seas' is an ugly, dilapidated gambling ship and there are reasons why it has to sail, despite the storm. The news that it's business as usual is greeted with differing levels of enthusiasm by the various interested parties - the captain, the ship's band, cocktail waitresses, gamblers, someone dressed as a large pink conch shell, and assorted bad guys. There's something

decidedly fishy going on, and it's not just the ship's buffet.

This is an enjoyable romp, a caper with a wacky cast of characters, and a bizarre plot that, despite being totally outrageous, is utterly believable. Sometimes I worry about my sanity. Dave Barry's strength is to make you care for the engaging, slightly shabby, unlikely heroes, while bringing a deranged array of plot threads to a satisfying and

riotous conclusion.

I didn't find Tricky Business as laugh out loud funny as the previous book, Big Trouble - the humour is gentler - often more of a sly nudge than being hit over the head with a cartoon anvil. There are, however, some very funny scenes and dialogue. Watch out for the Channel Nine News Team who play a small, but hilarious, role.
