Secrets abound in Shenstead. Or do they? It seems that nothing is secret, not with a couple of nasty, resentful old bitties like Prue Weldon and Eleanor Bartlett around. They have taken it upon themselves to terrorize James Lockyer-Fox.

James’ wife Ailsa is found dead on the terrace of the Lockyer-Fox home, Shenstead Manor. There is no sign of foul play except for some blood found next to her body, which turns out to be animal blood. Even though the police and the coroners office say that Ailsa died of natural causes, Prue and Eleanor don’t believe it, and won’t give up harassing James. Because of their constant gossip, and innuendos, as well as the telephone harassment campaign that they have begun against James, they have driven the poor man into isolation.

It isn’t only Prue and Eleanor who are terrorizing James. There is also another voice that has him completely paralyzed. The voice is disguised, and comes across sounding like Darth Vader. However, even Darth Vader wouldn’t be this cruel. The voices know a lot of things that no one other than a family member would know. They also accuse James of things that are just not true. If they were revealed, even though not the truth, James would be destroyed.

Meanwhile a group of travelers have taken up residence on a plot of land that is adjacent to James’ property. The leader, a man who calls himself Fox Evil, says that if they stay long enough the land will become theirs. All they have to do is keep it closed off from the rest of the land around them, and live on it for a certain period of time and the property becomes theirs. However it looks like perhaps Fox has other reasons for wanting to be on that land. Reasons, which aren’t in the best interests of his little band of travelers.

Meanwhile, Mark Ankerton, James’ solicitor, is concerned about James’ mental, and physical health. The man is going downhill fast. That is until Nancy Smith shows up on the scene. James had sent a note to Nancy asking to see her. Twenty-eight years previously, James’ daughter had become pregnant. To save her reputation, and perhaps their own, James and Ailsa had managed to have the baby adopted right after birth. Now James wants to see her, and have her in his life. At first Nancy was against this, but decides to see her grandfather after all. With Mark’s help she manages to get to know her grandfather, and actually likes what she sees.

Thanks to Mark, and the growing admiration and friendship that Nancy feels towards James, soon the secrets come out. As does the vicious natures of two women who have been trying to destroy James. Soon the real reason for the band of travelers and their leader Fox Evil for being in Shenstead is also revealed. And the truth as to what happened to Ailsa Lockyer-Fox is revealed.

I sincerely enjoyed reading FOX EVIL, and do recommend that any of you that are Minette Walters fans definitely read it. You will not be disappointed. And of you that have not read a Minette Walters book you will be more than pleasantly surprised with this wonderful author’s talents.
