I have not read anything by Sandra Brown for a long time, so this was a treat. I forgot how she transports her readers and the involvement I feel. I do enjoy when I can visualize these characters because of the author's proficiency.

There are 3 main characters: a doctor, a cop and a psychopath. The doctor, Rennie Newton, serves on a jury where she votes "not guilty" at the trial of a contract killer. This is when her problems begin. Wick, a cop, looses his direction when a family member has been killed. Wick knows who the perpetrator is but he sets himself up and the killer walks away. The third member of this trio is the psychopath. Ricky Lozada is absolutely wicked.

The former police team of Wick and Oren was successful until Wick was forced into a leave of absence. Now, they have a job to do that can not wait. Another murder involving a doctor happens and it is more than a hunch that Ricky Lozada is involved. Wick has a personal interest in seeing that this case is dealt with in a swift efficient manner. His surveillance requires watching Dr. Rennie Newton, not an unpleasant chore. The police are trying to determine if Rennie has some alliance with Ricky Lozada. Did she hire a contract killer to rid herself of a physician that is in contention for a special appointment?

Wick meets Rennie, of course she did not know his intentions at this time. Phone calls and flowers materialize via this creepy, insane character, Ricky Lozada who acknowledges he has a crush on Rennie. Just a few of the things that identify Lozada is his love for scorpions, shaving his body, and being able to enter any facility without a problem. He is cold-blooded killer.

After Wick is injured, he and Rennie meet again. There is definite feeling from the beginning of the book that there is a lot more to Rennie than what appears on the surface. Who is she really? Her past life is filled with inconsistencies.

A devised plan is set in place to catch Ricky Lozada and you will enjoy reading to see how and if this is possible.

Sandra Brown has the reputation for writing clear, tight plots. This was no exception.
