Three Glasgow women have been horrifically murdered, scalped, and their bodies dumped in a Glasgow park. Apart from the fact that they're all apparently the victims of a warped serial killer, there appears to be nothing to connect them.

The deaths become the main focus of attention for police Chief Inspector Lorimer, psychologist Dr Solomon Brightman and newspaper reporter Martin Enderby. The police need to find the murderer quickly - he's struck three times in quick succession and there's nothing to suggest that he will stop the grisly murders until he's caught. Lorimer reluctantly calls in Dr Brightman to try and draw up a psychological profile of the murderer, despite his misgivings about this avenue of enquiry.

NEVER SOMEWHERE ELSE is an extremely gripping and atmospheric read. It's a nice mixture of psychological thriller, police procedural and whodunnit. Although the killer's methods are horrific the violence is never overdone. The overall impression is one of pure unadulterated evil but with the minimum of gore, which I found very refreshing.

The sense of place and descriptions of Glasgow are excellent, and the writing is polished and well paced. The characters are well drawn and original, if sometimes a little cold and difficult to fathom.

The dark and sombre tone picks up the throbbing undercurrent of tension which characterises the book. Overall, a thrilling and exciting read.
