New York detectives Ben Stack and Rica Lopez have a nasty case of arson and murder to investigate when a well-off Manhattan resident is found dead in his apartment - having been tied up, covered in gasoline and set alight. The murder itself is horrific enough, but within a very short time it becomes apparent to the police and fire department that this is not just a one-off atrocity. A very warped mind is at large in New York. More and more cases occur - each one with the same cold-blooded trademarks. Stack and Lopez are floundering as the killer stays several steps ahead of them as they struggle to investigate the seemingly unconnected series of murders.

This is an interesting thriller with some extremely taut scenes and some great descriptions - particularly of the fires as they take hold. The book moves between past and present and the reader has to pay close attention to keep up with what is happening. John Lutz is good at characterization and there are some nicely depicted supporting players. My only problem was that there were too many of them, which made keeping things straight quite hard at times. There were also a number of scenes that could have used some editing and this affected the pacing, which was a shame, as for much of the book it was a gripping thriller.
