Edna Buchanan's series character Britt Montero returns on her best novel. Multimillionaire scion, R. J. Jordan, is two weeks away from being killed on Florida's Death Row for the decade-old murder of his wife, Kaithlin. All of his appeals have been turned down even though his wife's body has not been recovered after all this time. Ý One night while walking on the beach Miami News reporter, Britt Montero is walking on the beach when she discovers the naked body of a female swimmer. After several fruitless attempts by the police in trying to ascertain the victim's identity they discover that it is the body of R. J. Jordan's wife. There was no way that he could have murdered his wife because he was still in prison and her murder was fairly recent. What happened? Did Kaithlin plan the perfect escape against an abusive husband or did R.J. plan the perfect murder? The answer will astound you. Ý Ms. Buchanan writes a strong, character-driven story where hidden secrets and agendas reveal themselves at the most inopportune time. The reader learns through secondary characters everything there is to know about Kaithlin Jordan. We learn everything about her including her unhappy marriage with R.J. all the way though her new life after her "death". She is a very complex character and that is what makes the story so intriguing and satisfying. There are lot of unexpected twists and turns throughout the novel and an ending that would make O. Henry proud. Edna Buchanan shows her literary strength with this work and provides us with one of the best mystery novels ever written. This book has my highest possible recommendations and it should not be missed.
