The new owner of Earlsacre Hall in Tradmouth is going to restore the gardens to their original design, which necessitates the removal of centuries of overlay to determine their 17th century form. When a stone plinth is removed, 2 bodies are found, the upper of which apparently had been buried alive.

DS Wesley Peterson, who also has a degree in archeology, is interested, but the bodies are over 200 years old, and a more recent murder must take precedence. Neil Watson, Wesley's school chum, is working against time, with a team of archeologists, in order to excavate the old gardens, so the new one can follow the plan of the old one. The garden designer, who is the son of a previous owner of Earlsacre Hall, declares he has no ties to the estate and is happy with the price he received from the new owner.

More bodies, both old and new are found. The usual cast of characters, DC Rachel Tracey who still lives at the farm with her family; DC Steve Carstairs, who has no clue how to behave in any social situation; DI Gerry Heffernan who is Peterson's boss, and who sings in the church choir. All become involved in the investigation in one way or another, and Neil gets involved with another inappropriate woman.

I really enjoyed the other books in this series. The Merchant's House, The Armada Boy, An Unhallowed Grave, and The Funeral Boat were all great fun, blending an old story with a new one, but this one seems more forced than the others.
