For those of you that haven't read this series, let me introduce you to two very smart cats: Dulcie and Joe Grey. These two felines speak, read, utilize the telephone and the ultimate: they help solve mysteries. Wilma and Clyde are their human housemates. Two strong males in the same house contribute to a sometime

turbulent relationship for Clyde and Joe Grey. They practice being at odds with each other especially when there is crime solving in progress.

Clyde's best friend is Max Harper. Police Chief Max Harper definitely needs a good friend, because he is accused of murdering two women who were often in his company. The murdered women were first discovered by young Kit (a kitten that was staying with Dulcie and Joe). This kitten, full of curiosity, leads all involved into a dangerous arena. The stabbed murdered victims were Ruthie and Helen Marner. Near to their blood soaked bodies was a jacket that belonged to Dillion Thurston and Dillion is missing. Kit did see the murderer and this individual looked similar to Police Captain Harper.

These four people - Max Harper, the murder victims and Dillion often rode horseback together. The relationship between young Dillion and the Chief of Police stemmed back to a previous murder where the Chief was impressed with this bright young girl's spirit and wanted to help her. Wisely, he didn't want to set himself up for scandal, so he never rode with her alone. The Marners joined them because Dillion and Ruthie trained for a horseback riding marathon.

The task for our feline friends is to clear Max Harper's name, to find the missing Dillion Thurston and to find the real killer. What is the motive behind this?

Sit back and enjoy! A cup of hot chocolate, a pillow behind your back and perhaps your favorite cat beside your side would also be fun as you are solving this mystery along with Joe Grey. Previous books in this series by Shirley Rousseau Murphy are:

1 - Cat on the Edge (1996)

2 - Cat Under Fire (1997)

3 - Cat Raise the Dead (1997)

4 - Cat In The Dark (1999)
