What constitutes justice? Can money and position really place people above the law? How far are the rich willing to go to find new and exciting experiences? All old, tired questions, ones we've heard before, and rarely are they answered to my satisfaction. This book is no exception.

When Lieutenant Anson Hilderbrand discovers that a friend and fellow officer has been brutally murdered, he swears he'll do whatever it takes to catch the bastards responsible. Sound familiar? I thought so. I've read this book a hundred times under a hundred different titles by a myriad of authors, many of whom did a far better job. It's an overdone, worn out plot potholed by cliches and very difficult to put an original spin to. In my opinion, J. W. Kerr fails to do so.

This is the second book in Kerr's Houston PD series featuring Anson Hilderbrand. I enjoyed watching as the lead character was fleshed out, but had hoped the author would give the police procedural aspect a bit more bite. The investigation felt tepid at best and the ending was telegraphed despite some half-hearted attempts at sleight of hand.

If you're in the mood for a light, easy read requiring little or no mental energy, this may be the book for you. Myself, I prefer a little more meat any maybe even some gristle on my mystery fiction bones.
