Maggie Kean is getting ready for the opening of her first show at The Outlook. After the events in A Dying Art the year before left her with a little extra money, she could spend some time sculpting and the opening is tonight. Mark, the manager of The Outlook sends her home because she is just in the way, and she returns that evening with her handsome escort, Detective Sam Villari.

There is one piece that Mark didn't think fit the theme of the evening and, of course, wealthy art collector Hank Duran wants to see it. Hank and Maggie go into the workroom and Maggie smells something funny. She traces the odor to the kiln, looks in, and finds a body.

The dead man is one of the members of the board of directors of the gallery. Why would anyone want to kill him? And especially with a vernissage going on in the next room? Maggie mouths off at the detective trying to question her, and finally, tells the story coherently...several times, before being allowed to go home to bed.

Maggie always has time for her friends, and Mark is having trouble with Jamie, his fiancee, who runs a catering business and small restaurant. Maggie snoops around and finds Jamie getting into a car with a stranger, so she follows and almost gets killed.

For those who like the more-or-less formulaic style of cozies, this is a good one. Maggie has a big mouth, and the requisite good friends and handsome boyfriend. But she also has psychological problems dating from the death of her mother and the withdrawal of her father. Maggie's brother, Hank Duran, her best friend Lisa, and Sam and his loud Italian family, all try to make her understand they love her but she doesn't understand. I am not a fan of the softer style of mystery writing, but this series seems to be a bit different.
