Nevada Barr has penned another great book with the addition of Hunting Season. In this, her newest offering, her reoccurring character, Anna Pigeon is once more back on the Natchez Parkway in the deep south of Mississippi. She is also dealing once more with the „good old boy¾ network that is so prevalent in this geographical area of the country.

At the opening of this book we find Ms. Pigeon once more confronted with a dead body. One of the workers at a tourist stop along the Parkway has discovered a large, nearly nude man in a rather compromising position in the bed of a long deceased Plantation owner¼s grandmother. Upon investigation what first appeared to be a possible sex crime is now at a dead end. The dead man, who everyone insists on calling, „Poor old Doyce¾ has a brother who is not only the local undertaker but is also running for Sheriff in the upcoming election.

While solving this the main crime Anna must also deal with poached deer, the desecration of an unmarked slave graveyard and the continued insubordination of Randy Thigpen, one of her underlings. Also rumor has it that someone much higher in the department is spreading rumors that Anna may not be fit for her job.

Along the telling of this story we discover that Anna is still in a semiserious romantic relationship with Paul Davidson. The only problem there is that Davidson is also the Sheriff in the adjoining county, an ordained minister and not quite divorced from his last wife.

I find almost all of Nevada Barr¼s books very enjoyable. The scenery and the locale make the books for me. I loved her description in this book of the late fall, early winter weather. I could almost smell the leaves and feel the crisp bite in the air. I love the fact that Anna is a strong female character that sometimes must let the soft underbelly of her feminine side slip through.
