Lacie Wagner, Washington D C TV anchor, has retreated to her Nantucket home to recover from the constructive plastic surgery she was forced to undergo as a result of the fire that killed Edward Beane. Years ago Beane had set a fire in a car that killed her father and destroyed her hands when she attempted to put out the flames. Years later Beane returned and kidnapped Lacie's daughter and held her captive for weeks until Lacie with the aid of a FBI agent tracked him down and destroyed him. In the conflagration Lacie's face was burned. Her peaceful recuperation is disrupted when on her routine jogging along the shore she discovers a female diver's body. Tom Wheeler, local doctor who acts as the island's coroner, is puzzled by the condition of the body and enlists the aid of Miles McKenzie, chief ME in Boston. Lacie discovers the body is that of a female diver from the ultrasecret SEATECs but when she tried to identify her she is stonewalled by the military and the body is taken away by the military. She becomes involved with her charismatic neighbor, Vale not realizing that he is a sadistic serial killer who has chosen her to tell the story of his exploits. When she realizes the evil behind the man who has disappeared she turns to Nick StJames, a renegade manhunter to track down Vale before he can perpetuate any more evil. This is a fast paced suspenseful narrative of the unspeakable evil and horror caused by one man. The characters are portrayed in depth with their very human emotions and problems. The descriptions of the locale and of the ocean are excellent. The details of the killer's method of killing are horrifying and so graphic that the reader experiences the deaths. A real page turner.
