I first picked this one up a couple of years ago, and, for some reason, after reading a few pages, decided it wasn't for me. After hearing Lehane speak in Omaha at Mayhem in the Midlands, 2002, I decided to try again. I'd glad I did.

Patrick Kenzie and his partner, Angelo Gennaro are private investigators who work out of a belfry in a Dorchester church. Patrick goes to The Ritz-Carlton to meet with a Boston politician who wants to hire his firm to find a cleaning lady who ostensibly has stolen some important papers and disappeared. Gennaro and Kenzie find the woman and discover what the Senator has tried to hide from him.

Kenzie's father was a hero fireman who came home and beat his children. Patrick has been trying to escape him all his life. Angie is married to another childhood friend of theirs, who beats her. Jenna Angeline, the maid, had a son by a pimp, both of whom are drug dealing gangsters. The politicians and their flunkies may even be less savory than the pimp and his son. And Bubba is there protecting Angie and Patrick's back when he needs to

This is a very moral work, despite the violence and gunplay. Kenzie has a firm sense of what is right and he and Gennaro may not always see the same side of an issue but they do work together to sort out the problems they are faced with.

I don't usually read 2 books in a series one right after the other. I finished this one in the afternoon and went out that evening and bought the second one immediately. The violence is an integral part of the story...of the two Bostons, the white Irish one and the black impoverished one.
