Jack Reacher is the gunslinger who rides into town to get the bad guys and then goes on his way. This time he's hired by M.E. Froelich, his dead brother's ex girlfriend, and head of the Secret Service security detail guarding the vice president elect, to find possible holes in the system and to prevent Armstrong's murder. Several threatening messages have been intercepted by the secret service, and M.E. is worried.

Reacher is the original wanderer. An ex-MP, he has no fixed address, but M.E. tracks him down by finding his bank account and waiting for him to have money wired to himself. She's waiting for him when he goes to pick up his money order, and tells him part of the truth. Reacher accepts the assignment and brings in Frances Neagley, another ex military cop who is now a PI in Chicago, to help.

Between them, in a short period of time, they figure out several times that the VP-elect could have been killed, even with Secret service protection. M.E. is not happy that her team is not secure, and convinces her superior that Reacher and Neagley should be kept on, at least for a while, until they determine whether the letters are a hoax.

This is not the great mystery novel. I'm not even sure it qualifies as a mystery. It's a political assassination thriller which travels the US from Atlantic City to Washington to Wyoming and places in between. It moves very quickly with a minimum of self absorbed introspection. Reacher is Yojimbo, or Shane, or The Lone Ranger. This is the 6th book in the series. It's the first one I've read but it won't be the last.
