Lara McClintoch, co-owner of an art gallery with her ex-husband, Clive Swain, is commissioned by reclusive billionaire, Crawford Lake, to buy the Etruscan bronze statue, Bellerophon, from Robert Goddard, a collector in France.

She finds the elusive and eccentric collector who is reluctant to sell, but tells her to come back the next day for his final decision. When she returns she finds him dead and the statue missing.

After being cleared by the police she begins her journey back to Italy to report her failure to Lake. She finds the statue hidden in the trunk of her rented car.

This begins a chain of events in which the statue (and a fake one) has a way of appearing and disappearing with a number of suspicious dealers involved. Her employer, Lake, elusive as ever, is not who he appears to be, and Lara is forced to determine who is trying to involve her in the art fraud.

The story line is excellent; the action is swift. There is never a dull moment with the reader never sure of the outcome. There is a wealth of interesting information about Etruscan civilization and art. The characterizations are true to life with some eccentric people to add color to the plot.
