During a Save-The-Forest demonstration in the northern California town of Bear Creek, Nick Two John, a full blood Yamaduchi, slashes the tires of one of the loggers. Resident Deputy Tempe Crabtree, who is part Native American, arrests him for vandalism. He threatens that if she doesn't let him go, then there will be more trouble for the town.

Nick, a reformed alcoholic, is an employe of the Bear Creek Inn, recently purchased and refurbished by a couple from Southern California. Claudia Donato bails him out and the next day, Tempe, her 16 year old son, and her fiance, Pastor Hutch Hutchinson, go to the Inn and take the trail walk that Nick leads. He is in charge of the Inn gardens and has a wide knowledge of the use of plants.

That night, Tempe and Hutch are having dinner at the Inn. Hutch is about to ask Tempe to set the date for their wedding, when there is screaming from the kitchen. Andre Donato,Claudia's husband is crumpled on the floor, dead of an apparent stroke. Later that night, Lupe, one of the kitchen help, falls ill with symptoms similar to those that caused Andre's death. Poisoning is suspected. The case is taken away from Crabtree and given to the detectives from the larger community nearby, who immediately fixate on Two John as the culprit.

This is the prequel to the series which includes Deadly Omen and Informally Yoked. It sets up interesting problems which are discussed in the other two books, Tempe's Indian heritage and the conflict with her Christian husband.
