What is there to say about Ed McBain that has not already been said? Probably nothing. He continues steadily and professionally to write book after book featuring the 87th Precinct in his mythical Isola which no one doubts is New York City. The veterans of the precinct hardly age at all, although in this book Steve Carella admits to having some doubts about continuing as a cop.

We meet again Fat Ollie Weeks from the 88th Precinct because of a body partially in each jurisdiction. Fat Ollie is as obnoxiously funny as ever. Acknowledging himself a musical genius, he cannot even master the first three notes of ěNight and Dayî which, of course, is only one note. Sent to a publisher on a case, he decides he wants to write a police thriller because he knows better than anyone what it is like.

The other members of the precinct appear briefly, but Carella is at the center of this investigation. I would have liked to see more of the others, but thatís the way it is. There is certainly plenty to

investigate: murder, drugs, counterfeit money, terrorism. The story is as up-to-date as Headline News and all the various subplots tie up into one comprehensive conclusion.

The book is competently plotted; the characters are as well developed as we can expect; the police procedures are outlined; the setting is unmistakable. You always know what to expect when you pick up an Ed McBain book and you are never disappointed. Some may be better than others, but none is bad. This one fits the mold.
