Ray Atlee, a 43 year old law professor at the University of Virginia School of Law, receives a letter from his father, requesting that Ray return to Clanton, a small Mississippi town. His father is ill and wants to discuss his estate with his two sons.

Ray is reluctant to return since he and his father have been at odds.

When he reaches the family homestead he finds he is too late to resolve their differences. His father has died.

He discovers $3.2 million in cash, packed in boxes. He is at a loss as to the source of the hidden money since his father was a respected upright judge.

In an attempt to protect his father's reputation he determines that there be no funeral or wake. Not knowing what to do with the money he hides it in the trunk of his car and starts to try to determine the

source of the money. That leads him to the gambling casinos in Tunica, Mississippi where the judge liked to spend his time. Complicating his life is his substance abusing younger brother and a pretty student he is trying to avoid dating, not to mention the various lawyers who converge on him.

Grisham writes a riveting book---catches the reader's attention from the beginning. His characters are true to life and recognizable. The description of the locations is great. The comparisons of the several

lawyers are very apt. The dialogue is crisp. The plot is well-developed and moves along at a rapid pace. The ending comes as a surprise.
