Julia and Paul Stanton and Lizzie and John Daly are two ordinary couples who know they are not going any further in their careers. Julia and Lizzie had been friends since school days. The Daly's are $35,000 in debt to Eddie Espisito, a loan shark, and see no way out of the debt. The two couples meet every Saturday night at a local night spot to unwind. The Daly's devise a scheme in which Lizzie will lure one of the frequenters of the bar outside and while Lizzie places him in a comprising situation John will videotape them They will use the tape to blackmail the man for the money they need. Lizzie succeeds, but when they confront the Stranger with the tape, he takes off with Lizzie in the car. After this, the plan goes wrong, and events occur which change drastically and horribly the lives of the five people. This is a fast-moving story with a well-constructed plot, with the portrayal of ordinary people coping with their problems. The reader is fascinated by the twists of fate and their tragic consequences. A quick read.
