Tai Chi and yoga teacher Cass Hendricks asks Maddie James to help him with his student Laurel whose neighbors hassle her about her cats. When Cass ad Maddie visit Laurel, they find her dead body at the bottom of her stairs. Police assume it's an accident and give Maddie permission to catch and move the large number of cats found in the house and yard.

Maddie, along with her Grandpa Leo and Ethan Birdsong, owns the cat café JJ's House of Purrs, where folks adopt rescue cats, enjoy Ethan's meals and freshly baked goodies, or retain the PI services of Grandpa, Daybreak Harbor's retired police chief. After assessing the number and condition of Laurel's cat population, Maddie calls for help: her shelter manager and volunteer, Adele Barrows, and Katrina Denning, Daybreak Harbor's animal control manager.

While moving sick cats to vets' care, trapping some, and generally finding places for 60 plus cats, Maddie becomes suspicious of Laurel's "accident." When the police identify Cass as a person of interest, Maddie and Leo start investigating. Complaining neighbors become suspects, along with Laurel's boyfriend, Billy. Police also check out Laurel's estranged sister.

Cate Conte rounds up the delightful feline-loving characters in Daybreak Harbor for another installment in her Cat Café Mystery series. Red herrings galore and appropriate twists, all delivered at a steady pace. Ms. Conte spends plenty of detail explaining cat hoarding and the fallout it creates. The complex mystery is well developed and keeps readers guessing. As usual, JJ provides just the right amount of feline relief.
