After being stalked and kidnapped in Missouri, thriller writer Beth Rivers has fled to Alaska, where she continues to write and live safely in Benedict, population 800. Paige Shelton's edgy Alaska Wild series continues to intrigue as Beth Rivers' mother, Mill, shows up unexpectedly in Benedict.

This story begins when Claudia bursts into the bar with a bleeding head wound. She is the battered wife of a local man, Ned Withers, whose dead body the police will find the following day. While dealing with Claudia's wound, Chief Grilson informs Beth that her mother may be in Alaska. And to make things interesting, there's a census man, Doug Vitner, in town, who goes missing just as he becomes a suspect in Ned's murder.

Then Mill and Beth investigate when they discover that Ned's sister, Lucy, a fugitive, lives with Claudia and Ned.

Shelton creates a character-rich environment that includes Police Chief Sam Grilson, who persuades Beth to take responsibility for the local one-sheet newspaper – the Petition. Other interesting folks are Viola, who manages Benedict House, a local halfway house, and Viola's sister, Benny, who runs the local bar.

Shelton skillfully builds a character-driven mystery that captivates as it provides red herrings and misdirections and pulls readers through a thoroughly entertaining account. Alaska Wild is an exceptionally conceived series.
