Beth Rivers encounters a series of events that prove somewhat challenging to her sense of safety in Benedict, Alaska and her painful recovery from a head injury and psychological trauma. In THIN ICE, Beth flees to the remote village to hide from the unidentified kidnapper who remains free.

In COLD WIND, when two young girls, who don’t speak, knock on Beth's door seeking help, she calls Police Chief Sam Grilson, who immediately brings Dr. Powder to attend to Annie and Mary. During the visit Chief Grilson informs Beth that one of his officers found an unidentified dead woman when investigating a report of strange animal screams in the night.

A recent mudslide changes long closed access by opening up an old logging road.

"Two girls, a woman's dead body, and a man whom everyone had been unaware of were now exposed." The girls' father comes into the police department looking for Annie and Mary. Crime scene and forensic specialists from Juneau investigate the recovered body. And a man living on State land claims he owns the parcel he inhabits.

In between Beth's efforts to find clues in Benedict, Detective Maguire, the St. Louis officer working on her kidnapping case, calls to inform her they finally identified her kidnapper, Travis Walker.

Paige Shelton constructs a complex, multi-layered story filled with twists and absorbing characters while maintaining a comfortable pace. Shelton's portrayal of Beth Rivers is compelling as her character deals with the psychological issues of kidnapping and head trauma and starting a new life in a strange place. This is a riveting read. Warning: Read THIN ICE first.
