THE ENDS OF THE EARTH is the third thriller in Robert Goddard's James Maxted series. Maxted is a Royal Flying Corps veteran, and has a team of loyal followers. Maxted's team—including Sam Twentyman, Malory Hollander, and Schools Morahan, who have been dealing with deadly situations for two previous adventures—reappear in the present book. As this book opens, WWI has just ended and they are waiting for him in Yokohama to begin a secret mission. Their wait seems to be in vain when they are shown proof that Maxted is dead. A photograph shows him with a bullet hole in his head.

The truth is soon revealed, and the team becomes involved in an elaborate plot with Maxted to bring down Fritz Lemmer, the evil head of a German spy ring. Lemmer killed Maxted's father, Sir Henry Maxted, and this death must be avenged. Although Maxted and his associates are highly trained and fearless, they are up against a formidable opponent who seems to have outsmarted them. Many adventures later, the tables turn once again.

THE ENDS OF THE EARTH contains all the ingredients for an enthralling read—evil characters who threaten the world, a hero with charisma and talent, and many set-backs and violent confrontations. For the reader new to this trilogy, however, it is often a challenge to keep track of all of the characters and their attributes. This thriller will appeal most to fans of Goddard who are familiar with his earlier books and what has transpired in them. The ending of this current book also leaves much room for a sequel.
