Amory Ames has marriage problems. She also keeps happening upon crime scenes. Combine the two, then mix in some society glamour in 1930s London, and you have a fun read that may not have a lot of depth but has plenty of entertainment value.

DEATH WEARS A MASK is the second in the Amory Ames series, but don't worry if you haven't read MURDER AT BRIGHTWELL. Ashley Weaver gets you up to speed quickly, and just as quickly gets you into the thick of a plot. This time, Amory is asked to discreetly investigate some of her social contacts to find a jewel thief, but it doesn't take long for murder to rear its head amid the pleasant dinner parties and elaborate masquerade balls, and Amory finds herself working to unmask the murderer. At the same time, Amory struggles to cope with a philandering husband and does some soul searching to come to terms with the fact that it may be time to file for divorce.

While the disintegrating marriage angle adds a bit of opportunity for character development, don't turn to DEATH WEARS A MASK for psychological insights or deeply drawn characters. All characters are fairly slick, standard, and expected. For that matter, much of the plot is, too, and the seasoned mystery reader will solve the puzzle long before Amory does. But don't let that deter you. Amory is still a delight to follow, and the settings and action make this fast read worthwhile.
