"He had money, power and influence. But when he couldn't have her, he killed her." So reads the tantalizing teaser on the front cover of the sensational true-crime thriller, Fatal Embrace. Written by award-winning journalist Chris Barrish and true crime pro Peter Meyer, author of The Yale Murder, Death of Innocence, and Dark Obsession, Fatal Embrace is a winning combination of well-researched investigative reporting and a well-written story that ultimately leaves readers as satisfied as they are horrified. Thomas Capano was a well-respected, politically connected married man and father of four whose career as a topnotch legal eagle in the shadow of Washington, D.C. gave him entry into powerful circles most men only dreamed about. On the fringes of that powerful circle was Anne Marie Fahey, the beautiful, ambitious secretary to the Governor of Delaware.

When Anne Marie went missing in June of 1996, her connections to the powerful governor made her disappearance front-page news almost immediately. A conscientious and professional woman, it wasn't like Anne Marie to miss work and not call. In fact, it wasn't like her to miss work at all. Concerned family members scoured Anne Marie's apartment for clues, finding only grocery bags left unattended, moldy mushrooms, and a personal diary that revealed the dutiful Anne Marie was having an illicit affair with a marred man she would only at first identify as T. C.

Later entries, however, not to mention sexy notes written on her lover's personal stationary, identified the mysterious T. C. as none other than Tom Capano himself, married father and family man. At first, Capano denied even knowing Anne Marie. Confronted with the evidence, however, the crafty Capano quickly changed his story to reveal that Anne Marie was a troubled woman who had been stalking him for months. Despite his incredible, not to mention inaccurate, tale, Capano still denied knowing anything about her disappearance.

Witnesses and credit card receipts, however, proved that Capano and Fahey had been to dinner on the night of her disappearance, making Capano the last person to see her alive. As Capano's story unraveled and further evidence of his involvement in Anne Marie's disappearance mounted, however, witnesses surfaced to seal Capano's fate.

First, Capano's own brother came forward out of guilt and remorse to tell Delaware prosecutors that he in fact had been recruited to take Capano and a rather large fishing cooler out on an impromptu "fishing" trip that fateful June. Then another of Capano's mistresses, Debby MacIntyre, confessed that Capano had urged her to buy a gun for him, for protection from a disturbed Fahey.

As the sordid tale unfolded, further evidence such as ATM receipts for a cooler the morning after Fahey's disappearance and the actual cooler itself, recovered by a local fisherman, all combined to make Thomas Capano the prime suspect in Fahey's murder.

With a riveting courtroom trial full of shocking details, family betrayal and final justice, Fatal Embrace concludes as a testimony to one woman's innocence and another man's guilt, which ultimately resulted in the death sentence. Several other true crime books have been written about the fascinating Capano-Fahey case, including a recent hardback by none other than Ann Rule herself, but Barrish and Meyer have succeeded in presenting a shocking story with both care and precision, making it a must-have for fans of the genre and casual readers alike.
