As I opened the mailbox I saw a package. I opened it and screamed! Since this is a mystery review let me reassure you that it was a scream of delight and not of horror. I had just received a copy of A Deadly Dozen to review. This book is an anthology written by the Los Angeles Chapter of Sister's in Crime. Twelve devious minds put to work to satisfy us, the reader.

Satisfy it does. It also horrifies and stimulates. There is not one bad story in the whole book. I read on and on throughout the night. When I woke up I looked like a victim from one of these stories. This anthology starts off with "Sentence Imposed" by Kris Neri. I looked at the story and figured that it would be a funny start to my reading experience. How wrong I was! This story is much darker than all of her other writing but absolutely heart stopping. You meet a likable character faced with a horrible situation. Zoe Morgan is a woman who is easily identifiable. She takes on a cause that is very important to her and does not let go. We are shown the way the dark side of a human can be used for good.

The next couple of stories are beautifully written. Phil Mann satisfies those readers who love the locked room mystery in "Touch Of The Vanish'd Hand." Any wife who feels they have been taken advantage of should read "Wifely Duties" by Cory Newman. Little bit of advice-don't copy the formula exactly. You'll have to read the story to find out why.

A clever little twist in "Driven to Kill" by Jamie Wallace will make you gasp in shock then laugh. A story that will not make you laugh but will take your heart at least ten minutes to calm down after reading is "Over My Shoulder" by Lisa Seidman. This is about your worst fear combined with admirable bravery from a young girl set on survival. In "Fatal Tears" by Ekaterine Nikas many emotions are running through out. Although you know morally what Deidre is doing is wrong, you will want to stand up and applaud that she finally gets the guts to stand up for herself against her diabolical sister Alex. This story is very satisfying for anyone who has a sister that maybe once in a while, they fantasize about killing. "Copycat" by Joan Myers is her first published piece of work in fiction. She sure picked the right genre because her story is delightfully devious. An ingenious way to get rid of someone you can't stand is the strongest part of the story.

A Deadly Dozen is an anthology that not only gives us a chance to sample a story by new authors such as Joan Myers and Phil Mann but it also gives us a chance to visit with authors who are well-known to us. We get to see their experimentation's in a different setting. This was a wonderful anthology and every single story is a credit to the mystery genre.
