It's fall and in the village of Nether Monkslip plans are underway for the annual duck race. Father Max Tudor is sent as an envoy to Totleigh Hall to ask Lord Baaden-Boomethistle for use of the estate's grounds. The lord consents, grudgingly, but not all is ducky at the great manor.

Soon after, Max, called again to the manor, finds Lord Baaden-Boomethistle's decapitated head in the nearby woods. Suspicion falls upon the lord's immediate family: his second, much younger wife, Bree, who rumor has it is having an affair with the stable hand; Peregrine, the wayward son; and Rosamund, the daughter who doesn't seem to like anyone in her family.

There are stories of ghosts in the old manor, black cats abound, and Max can't seem to shake dreams of the headless horseman that chased Ichabod Crane - as the lord was out riding his horse when it happened and was decapitated by a trip wire strung up along his usual route.

Max, a former MI5 agent turned Anglican priest, once again teams up with Det. Chief Inspector Cotton. This doesn't necessarily sit well with Max's bishop, as murder seems to follow the vicar. Max, too, wonders whether he is a catalyst for murder, or whether crime-solving might be another calling. In any case, he finds it hard to stay away from the investigation. The past also haunts the handsome, intelligent Max, and may put his own family (wife Awena and newborn son Owen) in danger.

Malliet deftly weaves her spell in this fifth book of the series, delivering a cleverly written mystery laced with doses of humor, plenty of red herrings and a dash of the spooky.
