Parker Bennett handled money. A lot of money. And all of that money belonged to other people. Shortly after he goes missing while sailing in the Caribbean it is discovered that nearly five billion dollars has also disappeared from the accounts he managed. Although he is presumed to be both alive and a thief, there is no hard proof of either. Living with the disgrace of Parker's apparent crime hanging on them, his wife and son try to go about their lives. Both are adamant that Parker is innocent and hope to prove it. Anne Bennett and her son Eric move from their palatial Connecticut home to a townhouse in Bergen County, New Jersey and Anne hires a design firm to redecorate their new home. Lane Harmon is the designer that is sent on the job. Before long, Lane is attracted to Eric and she gets caught up in the family's effort to prove Parker's innocence. Has she put herself and her young daughter in harm's way?

THE MELODY LINGERS ON has all of the hallmarks of a Mary Higgins Clark novel. There are hidden secrets within a family, a dangerous romantic relationship and plot twists to build the suspense. But for the most part this book did not live up to the author's reputation as "The Queen of Suspense." The suspenseful momentum never really got off the ground. Although the plot did have some twists to it, for the most part the story was bogged down by the characters pondering what had happened to them. In the author's early books the suspense built to a fever pitch causing readers to silently beg the characters to avoid the dangers unfolding on the pages. In this book that level of suspense just doesn't happen.

THE MELODY LIVES ON is a comfortable, if somewhat bland, book to read. While not as suspenseful as readers of Mary Higgins Clark might expect, it is still an enjoyable book well suited for the beach or a rainy afternoon.
