The plan: Belle and Rosco will marry. She is a crossword expert/editor and he is a private investigator. Belle (Annabelle Graham),in her early 30's, has an unimpressed father who has voiced disapproval of her life partner choice. Rosco Polycrates, 38, formerly on the police force, does not measure up to his prospective father-in-law's standards. Belle and Rosco do not care if he approves. They will marry on a yacht.

Wedding plans must pause because two vagrants are found dead in an alley. Usually, someone's unrelated death does not stop a wedding, but this was different. The first victim is a man named Freddie, who has dog food in his pocket. The second is a woman. One of the common denominators is that each deceased person has a newspaper with a crossword puzzle placed under their head. This creates questions and reservations for Belle and Rosco.

It became known that the first victim, Freddie, had a dog and Rosco commences a search. Because he becomes privy to some information, Rosco is placed in dire jeopardy and Belle must solve many puzzles in order to locate her fiance. You, the reader, will be able to sleuth along with her as you solve the six enclosed puzzles. The setting for The Crossword Connection is in Newcastle, Massachusetts. Newcastle has some impending battles that are property related. There is concern that the mission building for the homeless may be torn down or removed. Vandalism and murder remind the concerned that this may be an opportunity to rid the area of homeless people and increase the value of property. Would someone kill to make this a reality or is this someone who has a vendetta against the unfortunate people of this

area?

The Crossword Connection is the third book in the series. The two preceding are The Crossword Murder and Two Down. Nero Blanc is the pseudonym for the team of Cordelia Frances Biddle and Steve Zettler, wife and husband. This is definitely a must read book for crossword buffs, a very creative vehicle in telling the story. I liked the story line, the realistic characters and sprinkling of fun and humor throughout the book.
